Alec in Japan

Life in Japan through the eyes of Alec, a teenager on a working holiday gap year.

About

Alec, the guy you're reading about now! There once was a boy called Alec. He was born on a cold winter’s night in February of 1989, a week before the USSR withdrew from Afghanistan. (It is not yet known if the two events are connected.)

He was born to a half Japanese-European mother and a Jewish father in London, and had a brother two years older than him. Over the coming years, the tectonic plates of Alec’s world shifted and he was shaped into the person he is today:

  1. His parents divorced.
  2. He lived in France for a year.
  3. He lived in Malaysia for 5 years.
  4. He lived in Scotland for 1 year.
  5. He lived in Australia for 4 years (and got Australian citizenship).
  6. He did the International Baccalaureate at school in London.

And now the next stage of his life has arrived as he embarks on a gap year working holiday to Japan; the land of the rising sun, the land of his ancestors, the land of maid cafes.

“But why?” you may ask. “Why has he started a website?” Well, Alec knows he has a large public; everyone wants a piece of this young man. This website was started to appease the masses and provide a place for his mummy fans to read about his travels at the edge of the world. It is also a place for people interested in Japan to read about Japanese life, love and llamas … well, maybe not llamas, but he’s working on it!

So what can one expect from Alec in Japan? There’ll be personal entries, articles about aspects of Japanese culture and reflections on current affairs in Japan. Alec also aims to provide plenty of video footage (and of course photos!) to bring his experiences to life and to allow you to see and hear the voices of the Japan for yourself.
